After such a great response to A Year In Faces we were inspired to transform it into an on-chain project. In doing so, we wanted to truly embrace the unique artistic opportunities the medium offers. That led us to Phaces, a living artwork which evolves every week over a 12 week period.
You can view the Phaces at: https://www.fxhash.xyz/generative/slug/phaces
Each Phace starts in black and white, a simple but fascinating look at the variety that can emerge from a few lines of code. It is a sober start to an exciting journey and a reminder that good things take time.
Each week, the Phaces evolve. The next evolution emerges every Saturday for 12 weeks, providing moments for the collector community to come together to share and celebrate the latest Phaces – there will be some wild ones in there!
Each Phace has a name, generated from a list of 144 adjectives and a 144 names randomly selected from the US census. Other features hint at the exciting evolutions to come. You know that Nonchalant Erma with Palette = Electric and Colour Boost = Wild is going to be up for a party.
We won’t say much more, for risk of spoiling the surprises but we can’t wait to see the Phaces emerge and evolve over these coming weeks. We'll be sharing updates here, on Twitter and Instagram.
Edition Size: 156. A tribute to the inspiration and evolution of fxHash over the 156 day beta.

Below you can see Phace #0 in phase 1 and 2 with phase 3 unknown. There are 12 phases in total.
Each Phace started life in a simple monochrome form. They were a look at procedural shapes and the endless fascination of flow fields. Week by week, things changed, starting with an explosion of colour for the first evolution. Below you can see all 156 Phaces in phase one and phase two.
Over time, more colour was revealed and things turned darker. Then the mouths began to grow: slowly but surely taking over. Lines became thinner to showcase the intricacies of the flow fields before chunky lines returned for the dense, colourful final forms. Below you can see each of the twelve phases for Phace #36 aka Doubtful Tyrone alongside an animation of Tyrone's journey. Press 'G' in live view to download your own grid of all your evolutions.
Finally, here's a look at all 156 Phaces in their final form. A glorious journey and we're just getting started…
